Retiring in Colombia: the pension visa step by step

By TrustCol LegalReviewed by our legal team4 min read

Quick answer

To retire in Colombia you can apply for the M pensionado visa. In 2026 you need a lifetime pension of at least 3 minimum wages: COP 5,252,715 a month, certified by the paying entity, apostilled and translated. The visa lasts up to 3 years, can include your spouse and dependent children, and after 5 years as the main holder you can apply for residency.

Who the retirement visa is for

The pension visa (Visa M – Pensionado) is for foreigners who receive a lifetime pension (government, company or private) and want to live in Colombia. It does not allow you to work in Colombia.

The 2026 income requirement

Requirement 2026 amount
Minimum lifetime monthly pension 3 SMMLV = COP 5,252,715
2026 minimum wage (SMMLV) COP 1,750,905

The minimum wage rises every January, and exchange rates move. If your pension is close to the minimum, check it with us before applying: a small drop in the exchange rate can leave you below the line.

Documents you'll need

  1. Valid passport.
  2. Pension certificate from the entity that pays it, showing it is lifetime and its monthly amount, apostilled and translated into Spanish. It can also be issued by the consulate of the country that grants the pension.
  3. Criminal record certificate from the country where you lived in the last 3 years, apostilled and translated if needed.
  4. Medical certificate of physical and mental fitness, issued in Colombia or in your home country.
  5. Health insurance valid in Colombia for the whole stay.
  6. Bank documents if requested. These can skip apostille if issued in an official OAS language.

Step by step

  1. Check your numbers: confirm your monthly pension in COP against the 2026 minimum.
  2. Gather and apostille the documents in your home country. This is the step that takes the longest.
  3. Translate the documents into Spanish with an official translator.
  4. Apply online with Cancillería and upload everything in the required format.
  5. Pay the fees when the application is approved.
  6. Register and get your foreigner ID card (cédula de extranjería) after the visa is issued.

Bringing your family

Your spouse or permanent partner, your children up to age 25 and children with a disability who depend on you economically can apply as beneficiaries of your visa.

From pension visa to residency

After 5 years as the main holder of the M pensionado visa you can apply for the resident visa (Visa R), which is valid indefinitely.
